       独立任务机经如何使用

  1. 通读所有口语机经目的在于对将要考到的题目有一个全局观,知道那些题关联度高。

  综合任务机经到底是如何帮助我们的呢?

  首先同学们要把其中的道理弄清楚。我们看综合任务机经,不是为了背,而是为了有针对性的补充背景,词汇,语句等一些列相关的内容。

  1. 熟悉机经内容对机经的内容一定要熟悉,如果我们对机经的内容很熟悉,就会感觉考题的难度瞬间相对降低了。相信平时同学们都有过这种感觉,在这里就不加解释了。

  2. 口头翻译机经通过对机经的口头翻译,检查机经中的内容自己是否都能用英语说清楚,有没有生词,难句或不理解的地方。

  一. 树立信心

  大家首先要对自己充满信心。

  1. 其实我们中国人已经很牛了,对比美国人,我们更优秀,为什么呢?因为美国人自己都承认:会说三种语言的人叫trilingual,会说两种语言的叫 bilingual,而只会说一种语言的人叫American。所以从这个角度,每个考过托福的人都比一个典型的美国人要强。

  2. 托福口语考试部分规律性很强,只要掌握了正确的方法和技巧,一定能顺利解决托福考试。

  3. 在口语考试中,我们不需要长篇大论,只需要在独立任务两题,按要求每题说45秒,综合任务四题,按要求每题说60秒就可以了,让你说一个小时你可能说不来,但是只要你能在2个45秒和4个60秒也就是330秒的时间里,滔滔不绝完美展现自己的口语实力,你就是个英雄,你就一定能获取最终的胜利。

  二. 找准位置

  与信心不足相比,还有另外一些同学,会过分自信;最常见的就是那些英语实力很强,功底扎实,平时与老外交流不成文题,可能还是某个英语演讲比赛的冠军。他们会想,口语还用练?现场随便一说不就OK了,其实不然,就算口语交流实力很强,如果不提前做好充分准备,考场上一样会失败。平时交流和考试是完全不同的,平时交流你可以借助面部表情,肢体语言来辅助交流,而托福考试只有你和冷冰冰的电脑,没有任何信息反馈和互动。再加上时间很紧,比如一个话题15秒准备45秒回答,如果不提前练习和准备,很容易考场上乱了阵脚。

  三. 消除幻觉

  经常会在网站上看到一些所谓的牛人分享的托福考试准备经验,最神的莫过与:一个星期意外考110+”还有什么“10天115+""29+29+29+29"的帖子,此时有些同学看了,即使明知不是自己的成绩,也会细细品味,跟着一块儿惬意一下,幻觉浮现,浮想联翩,好像自己也得到了同样的成绩。

  各位同学一定要记住,每个人的程度是不一样的,我们一定要正视自己,合理定位。设计一套符合自己的复习计划,每一道题都要练习到位,不可浅尝辄止。别光迷信经验,别光说不练。勤奋+刻苦+努力才是永恒不变的经验。牛人110+里面的每一分都是他们有生以来学习英语打拼汗水的结晶。经验只不过是hard work发出的光芒。

  四. 精炼语音

  好的语音语调会给人非常好的first impression,我们在考试的时候,语音语调和内容重要程度之比至少应该是3:7。首先,我听了很多学生的答案, 28+流利程度不错,口音绝对是没有问题,偶尔有一两个音素可能稍欠标准,但是总的来说对美国人来说还是相当顺耳的,接近native speaker。26- 27(口语没有25分)的可能流利度差些,不过口音仍然是没有太大问题的。综上所述26-30的口语分数总体听来就是给人在说英语的感觉,中国味比较淡,基本标准度,强读,弱读,停顿,节奏都和native speaker差别太大,说的不保守点,就像我们听大山说中文那种感觉。23-24,逻辑内容都没有太大问题,但是语音语调无一例外的都有些问题,听起来有点费劲,或者某些音素的发音有缺陷,或者中国口音较浓,甚至能听出是那个省的战友。22-18的逻辑内容可能就差些,口音和上个档的有同样的问题。22-18的口音不一定就比23-24的差,但是24-和26+相比的语音语调绝对是有明显差距的。

  所以如果想取得26分以上,我们就不能忽视对语音语调的精雕细琢。

  五. 输入素材

  有时口语答不出来,不是因为不会交流,而是因为人生经验不够,输入不够。貌似托福口语一二题和我们生活很近,但是仔细想来,我们在参加托福考试之前,根本就没有认真思考过这类的话题。很多同学会问我,我平时和外国朋友,聊天如滔滔江水连绵不绝,为什么托福口语弄不来啊?关键就是他们没有整理自己的人生经验,没想过我们经常接触而又经常忽视的问题。比如the person you admire, the place you often, the book you like to read, memorable time,等等,这些经历我们都有,但是如果突然袭击,我们很难流利表达,这一点大家都一样,比如有一次我跟一个美国朋友聊天,我突然给他出了一道题:“choose a place you go to often that is important to you and explain why it is important, include details and examples in your response.那个美国哥们儿顿时愣住了,开始傻笑。所以我们会发现,如果想在托福口语里面取得高分,一定不能打无准备之仗,一定不能大脑空空的,一定要提前进行有效的输入,有针对性的准备,根据托福考试出题的特点,多背一些材料,没事儿就找托福题自言自语,这样就一定会在考试中游刃有余。

  六. 借助网络

  网络真是无限神奇,无比强大,比如answers yahoo, google, wikipia 等等,都可以成为我们的好帮手,如果口语独立任务没有思路,没有相关的生活经验,我们可以上answers yahoo里面寻找一下灵感,词汇搭配可以用GOOGLE去检验是否地道,用wikipia扩展视野。

  七. 放平心态

  真正考试的时候,一定要放平心态,冰冻三尺非一日之寒,无论什么样,已经不是考试当天所能决定的了,我们此时需要做的就是调整好心态,不紧张。记住托福考试毕竟不是中国的中高考!

雅思口语语料–名字的含义

(一)阅读

我推荐的阅读组合是这样的:OG+Delta,OG是自测用的,了解题型,找到弱点;Delta是查缺补漏用的。有人说Delta出题思路和真题差别太大,但我感觉里面的专项练做得还是不错。没有必要每个专题都复习,挑自己的弱点就行了。

我的阅读其实不是很好,基本上一开始看阅读总是会走神,眼睛在看,心里默读,但读后就全忘记了。这是最痛苦的时期。我的解决办法就是直接“口译”中文,看着英文句子的同时,心里直接翻译成中文,不给英文默读留时间。因为要完成完整的句子翻译,必须要先把句子看完,而且具有阅读的目的性,所以速度会提高一些。然后当利用这个方法快速进入全神贯注的阅读状态后,大脑自动就停止了中文翻译,直接阅读了。

下面说说考试的过程吧。平时练习阅读的时间在每篇10分钟左右,所以我在考试的时候就有意放慢了进度,每篇都15分钟做完剩下5分钟检查。我极力支持阅读的时候做笔记,尤其是对于我这种记忆力不太好的人来说。托福阅读的框架性很强,把那条主线抽取出来列在草纸上可以加深对文章的印象,而且许多题看着笔记就能答。平时做阅读练习时,我大概要花6、7分钟在阅读文章上,但做题时候就会非常从容。

(二)口语

口语是另一个让我比较意外的section。29分,3个good。我对自己的口语还算有信心的,因为找了个网上外教,天天跟外教说英语,跟外教模拟过托福口语考试,很有语感,所以考试时不紧张,另外外教经常给我反馈,所以我在口语方面犯的错误很快就能得到纠正,这个是那个外教网的地址,http://www.ueionline.com/aboutUS/news/newsDetail.jsp?id=1128,有免费的试听课,价钱也不贵,性价比比较高。

通过跟外教的模拟,我发现口语任务其实对考生的要求是简单而直接的,它不需要你把一件事情说得滴水不漏,对于独立任务来说,你说得明白,他们听得懂,就行了;对于综合任务,你说明白,让他们知道你听得懂看得懂,也就行了。在这种情况下每一个观点都要用尽可能简洁直接的方式去表达,你可以试着去同义替换,来体现对语言的掌握,但如果没有这个能力还要勉力为之,你会眼看着时间加速地流走,自己对着电脑只顾张口结舌嗯嗯啊啊。

考前三天的时候我用口语真经做了一遍全真的练习。那是很艰难的感觉。从一开始的时候,我说到严重的口误时候就会突然停下来说不下去,或者3点的问题我说了2点时间就已经到了。我一整天练了20多个口语,不断地强迫自己。其实说到后来就有感觉了,自己看着表的指针走到哪里就会很本能的反映出现在应该说到哪一点,虽然没看过模版却在练习中磨合出了一套自己的“表达习惯”,没有特别要求开头说什么结尾说什么,只是很自然地成为了一种习惯,这也是得益于平常跟外教练英语。口语记模版是一件比较无聊的事。我感觉到现场上去想模版,甚至因为紧张忘了一句模版就说不下去是很不值得的。如果不放心,就记下自己平时说的习惯。毕竟别人说的模版不是自己的,说起来总会很拗口,还不如自己总结。

Tip:不要停下来。对着话筒不停地说,连贯性非常重要。哪怕你不知道说什么,也要对着话筒勇敢地讲。这种勇气在练习的时候可以强迫自己练出来。如果没有时间练习,在考试的时候也要尽全力不要让自己的回答间断或有太多语气助词。

(三)听力

一开始对听力没什么信心。虽说平时看的英文电影和电视剧不少,而且Harry Potter的四、五、六部原版磁带我都是利用上学路上的时间听下来的,但是一碰到理解性的题立刻就开始发晕了,尤其是学校考试,几乎每次都扣分,托福听力也是这样的,语速不快,口齿清晰得很,全听懂对于大部分考生没有问题,但一到答题就开始困惑了。

所以这个时候,我用的方法是找了一个全部是国外大学课程的网站,逼着自己去听,因为课程有趣,并且有很多类目选择,所以实际上玩着学过去,这是网址:http://www.ueionline.com/school/ ,希望对大家有所帮助。

关于听力笔记,确实是一边写一边记关键的,但不要纠结与到底写了什么,因为基本上听完后答题也不怎么看了。我在练习的时候形成了一套自己的符号系统,比如※表示例子,△表示观点等等,这样考试的时候就不会慌张,而且对做题的时候回忆原文有帮助。

说说TED,貌似当时没看到人推荐过,但这个绝对是我的大爱。各种话题,长度可自己选择,还可以在迫不得已的时候显示字幕。说话也是正常谈话形式。很容易坚持练下去.

Tips:托福设计成现在这个样子是有它的道理的。它旨在让考生能更好的适应北美校园生活,也便于北美学校选出那些更容易适应校园环境的学生。顺着ETS的路子走不会有错。把conversation当作你上学路上听到身边经过的美女或帅哥的谈话,或者是任何一个你感兴趣的人,你就不会觉得听力那么难懂。你只是在试图了解他们的生活。对于lecture也是一样,不要看到botany class就头大,把它当成北美校园里的一堂试听课,把屏幕上的那张脸当作你真正的老师,记botany class的笔记,而不是枯燥的英语课考前复习。听力会变得轻松很多。

(四)写作

这一点我就没有什么发言权了,满分比比皆是,我练得的确不多,综合写作也没有特别套模版,独立写作是凭感觉,看了官方那几百篇范文,总结了一下它们的共同特点:没有模版痕迹。从OG上面抽了几道题目自己写了一下观点和举例,没有写太多完整文章。

托福一战到二战111分的血泪史我先简单介绍下我的情况,本人今年大三,在某知名985大学年会计。本来进入学校的分数不低,但是由于所念专业不喜欢参加课外活动较多所以大一基本荒废英语,所以四级才出此渣成绩。后决定申美读研,才走上了考托的血泪之路。本人阅读不差,听力通过看尚友论坛抱学霸大腿方法得当也提升很快,但口语和写作一直是我的弱项。一战89(R26+L25+S16+W22)二战成绩如下,

首先我要强调:

1、不要看我 CET4 五百渣你们就觉得考111很容易,这是一个掉皮的过程,单词绝对是重中之重,阅读单词题每片至少3道,所以单词不仅会影响你的正确率还会影响你的速度。对于听力来说,耳朵对单词的辨析也是很重要的。这些我接下来都会介绍到。


2、备考战线不要拖太久,不要对你的托福考试做出多么宏伟的复习计划,要充实,连续,高强度,战线太久会对你的学习反馈,记忆带来阻碍。


3、坚持!不然复习的再久也没用。好我们进入正题!关键词已高亮。


单词:百词斩+词以类记+镇魂单词+词汇440题。我的方法是一周背完托福单词,不认识可能会丢分的,即可能出在单词题的词,掌握这一类词可以主要看词汇440题+镇魂单词,我会把一周的单词学习量分到每天,每天分为早上背诵晚上复习两部分。


早上学习:百词斩记忆部分时我是看单词,看意思,跟读,而复习部分时则是听单词,选择意思。背完今天的百词斩就会背词以类记or 镇魂。


晚上复习:利用的是百词斩的复习功能和白天你背单词过程中自己总结的容易忘记的单词。总之复习的环节复习的是你的薄弱单词,这样既节省了你的时间也复习了生疏的单词。


时间分配:这个要看你个人记忆速度,我在记忆的时候白天两个小时记忆,晚上一个小时复习。每天记忆,每天复习,而且每天复习的时候会带上之前的生疏单词,意思就是你在本周最后一天要过完所有你总结的生疏单词。


Reading Section:TPO+刘文勇、无老师


阅读不是我介绍的重点,因为大家这么多年英语学得基本都是阅读,方法也都大同小异,我就简单说下我的方法,前半个月每天1—2篇阅读不限时,先保证正确率,做完题目的时候,会在每个题目上标出题目的类型,例如:词汇题,推断题,细节题等,然后批改的时候总结自己哪一类题目错了,会想明白自己错误答案到底错在哪,正确答案对在哪,最后才是阅读单词整理。后半月开始计时每天三篇阅读,锻炼速度和准确率。哦!阅读我经常会关注刘文勇、无老师,这些人的微博和网站我都经常刷,方法技巧我也推荐你们可以多看看。总之阅读不用我说你们自己都会练的。

听力的关键词是:记忆背景场景词汇+做听力挖空练习。听力无处不在,听力,口语,写作都有,所以听力真的非常重要,而且是短期之内最好提分的部分。前半个月我是每天模考一个TPO的听力,算分,总结,然后把错题多的听力重新听一遍,认真听,找出漏听的部分反复听,实在听不出来才看原文,然后在听几遍巩固,然后分析错题。这个过程很费时间,所以我一天只能完成一个到两个exercise的内容。除此之外技巧方面也关注张艳老师的网站,还有各大备考论坛下载一些讲义巩固技巧。


除了集中时间的模考,零散时间全部被我用来练听力,还有一周考试的时候刷机经。听力真的要坚持,因为耳朵很容易生疏,尤其是在非英语环境。


Speaking Section:TPO+Doris老师+录音


之前自己的口语和写作一直是自己单打独斗,一战之后通过高中同学认识了Doris老师,上了几次她的免费网络课堂,听了她的公益口语音频,还有进行对话,及时反馈,比一个人练效率要高很多。口语的结构很重要,尤其是综合口语,传统的模板已经不足以拿高分,我主要根据Doris老师的课堂和讲义来调整自己的结构和顺序,包括答题的时间控制。我觉得Doris老师独创的语速快和语速慢结构很有用,我自己希望做到从语速慢过渡到语速快的套路中。所以这方面提高了后分数自然也就提高了,在这里介绍给大家,小伙伴可以自己去练习。


PART Writing: 185题库+李笑来范文+Doris老师+批改


重点来了!个人觉得写作这个东西,还是需要别人来点拨的,不能只是凭着自己的感觉来写,我在这里讲三点思路、方法和范例。思路分析我看的是Doris老师的185题库,这个是我在她那里上课的时候给我的。是185题库,每一个题目下面都有思路解析。但是后来发现Doris老师的方法更有用。偏题难题会参考李笑来的范文。


不要用一般的模板,而是注重结构,然后就可以原创自己的模板。前几篇你可以先打草稿,之后就可以直接在脑子里做好规划。自己之前最好也就写到22了。后来我在结构和逻辑上做了调整后,分数就提高的很快了,二战就考了28。所以你们作文遇到瓶颈不是因为练得不多,很有可能是方向的问题。还有就是批改,这是一个让你不断改进的过程所以是必须的,我是听了Doris老师的免费公开课,后来参加了她的网络特训,老师就帮我做了批改。首先批改要完全从评分标准出发,除去修改语法逻辑错误,更多的是自己要进行精写,就是一个题目不止写一次。


也就是说要掌握句子的连接和变化,重点不妨在语法上,这个可以用过辅助翻译练习和句子改写练习来提高。因为老师马上要出书了,所以我不好透露太多。但是大家可以关注她的微信订阅号:tuoyatang,她经常在里面做一些段落和口语回答示范。当然,写作还是要多练,我一战之前写了16篇文章,二战之前写了20多篇,所以。写作绝不是一个可以突击的科目。


总结:

说了这么多,我还是觉得托福虽然是语言考试,但是毕竟是提升自己语言能力的一个阶段,语言提高了对于各位在以后的求学之路上可以带来很多的便利。所以分数是一方面,提高自己才是重中之重!各位加油!

雅思阅读:四步搞定选词类Summary考题

选词类summary 一直是不少雅思考生又爱又恨的题目,它形似summary 类填空题,需要回原文定位分析,但又部分题目又需要识别选项中与原文答案的同义替换,两个环节缺一不可。下面我们来看看新东方在线李学义老师提供的解题妙招。

先来看一个雅思阅读中的经典题目。

标题:GREYING POPULATION STAYS IN THE PINK

题型分布:选词summary–句子配对题(题型种类少,填空题目多达9题,可以按照本题顺序做)

解题步骤:

一、审题

(1) 题目提醒(无提示考察哪些段落)

(2) 小标题(无小标题提示考察内容)

(3) 题型顺序(首个题型,数目多,按照首段顺序读)

二、解题

(1) 选项词性/褒贬分组

选项词性既有名词,又有形容词,更有doing结构。而且,有两组反义词falling、 increasing,earlier、 later,可分别为同一空的备用选项。

(2) 预判

对于Q14的词性及色彩预判难点在于判断首个空前is的真正主语是谁。这里涉及到长难句分析,采用括号法将句子中的修饰成分去掉,我们抽出的句子主干如下:Research ( carried out by scientists in the United States ) has shown that the proportion ( of people over 65 suffering from the most common age-related medical problems ) is ______ 这里面我们总结出一个修饰结构sth./sb. ( doing sth. / done by sth. / 介词 名词),括号内的部分都是修饰性结构,我们真正关注的是这些结构前面的名词。去掉括号内的结构后,我们发现我们要的答案其实在这样一个结构中 proportion is _________ 。能力比较强的同学其实还会发现14、15、16空含有并列结构 and和also,句子色彩是保持一致的。

(3) 定位

第一句话题干中有United States和65作为显性定位词,而且从首段读开始读符合常理。通过预判寻找proportion 或其替换词。原文第2段含有结构 smaller proportion满足了要求,其他部分也与刚刚划出的括号内的结构有对应。

(4) 解题

Q14中词库中falling 对 smaller 做了替换,即为答案,反映出老年人患病人口减少的情况。Q15与之用and并列,表示这种speed如何,根据并列结构‘结构相同,色彩一致’的原则,选increasing 问题不大。原文中rate 与speed 对应,rate (at which these diseases are declining )continues to accelerate. 注意括号法的使用,即使考鸭们不熟悉accelerate(加速),根据 continue 代表动作的持续加之与前面内容色彩一致,increasing依旧为答案。Q16通过than的出现判断此空为比较级,earlier, later, more都符合,题目中 be donging及in the past 的出现表明在进行今昔对比。根据色彩一致性,疾病应该对老年人影响越来越晚为好。文章中第3段最后一句通过数据比较给出了答案即later。

Q17、Q18中间用到了but衔接,难度并不大,答案依次为M 、J。需要指出的是Q19 Q20同样适用了并列结构,尤其是Q19答案词性并不是常见的to do 结构。根据我刚刚提到的并列的两部分‘结构相同’的原则,可知Q19为与changes并列的名词。Q19 Q20 答案依次为N 、K。而需要指出的是Q21不少考鸭容易误选independent, 是因为忽视了reduction 这种表示色彩正负的关键词的提示,原文与之对应的为第7段的drop。所以,会顺利选出G。最后,Q22所在句子本身定位不明显,但有明显的比较级less做定位,回到原文第7段尾句,我们找到了答案financial burden 替换为cost。

总结:

题目的本身解析如上,但我们更希望做到举一反三,为各位考鸭总结出本题涉及到的两个主要考点并列关系及比较结构(涉及到的转折及因果关系以后有机会再作分享)。

  在雅思口语的Part 1中,考官经常会问你这样几个问题:

  What is your name?

  Does your name have any special meaning?

  Who gave you your name?

  遇到这样的问题,大家是不是感觉有点无从下手呢?毕竟这里面牵扯了很多文化层面的东西。提到文化我们就会感觉我们中华文化博大精深,解释起来非常困难;而且我们自己的语言水平有限,解释之后老外也可能会不明白。

  其实大家大可不必有这样的担心,因为我们留学监理网的老师会手把手教会你如何解释自己名字的含义。

  如果你叫姚明,那么你可以这样去介绍:

  My name is Ming the same as the Ming Dynasty which is one of the dynasties in China’s history. In Chinese language, ming means brightness, light, sunshine and intelligence. When my grandfather gave me this name, he wished me a wise mind and promising future.

  如果你叫欧豪,那么你可以这样回答考官:

  My name is Hao which means an outstanding and heroic figure in Chinese. It is usually the grandparents or parents who give name to the new-born baby. And for me, my mother named me. She hoped that I could become a high-flier. As she has such a high expectation, I will do my best to make her proud.

  如果你叫任贤齐,那么你在介绍自己的时候真的可以大做文章了:

  My name Xianqi, which comes from China’s classic poem, given by my great grandfather who read all the famous classic works of literature. It means that a gentlemen always tries to equal and pull up to someone who does better than himself in different aspects of life. My great grandfather passed away when I was very little.   如果你叫黄晓明,那么雅思考官一定不会问你的名字是什么含义,而是会直接问下一个问题:

  当然了,如果你的名字不是自己家里人取得,而是找算命先生算的,那该如何表达呢?

托福阅读-事实信息题中的因果逻辑题

事实信息题是托福阅读中考查比重最大的题型之一。毫不夸张地说,对于任何一个分数段的学生来说,事实信息题的完成情况,就决定了阅读的得分情况。

笔者结合自己的教学经验先来说一下学生在做事实信息题过程中出现过一些“状态”:

1. 做题时间长。中国的考生遇到了事实信息题,不喜欢定位,而是喜欢习惯性的把相应的段落的从头至尾地读一次。阅读的信息较多,阅读时间长。而一场阅读托福考试的阅读量对于那些原本阅读速度就慢的学生来说,用这种思路做题,很有可能是做不完的。

如例1:OG: Applied Arts and Fine Arts

…Sculptures must, for example, be stable,which requires an understanding of the properties of mass ,weight distribution , and stress .Paintings must have rigid stretchers so that the canvas will be taut, and the paint must not deteriorate, crack, or discolor. These are problems that must be overcome by the artist because they tend to intrude upon his or her conception of the work. For example, in the early Italian Renaissance, bronze statues of horses with a raised foreleg usually had a cannonball under that hoof. This was done because the cannonball was needed to support the weight of the leg. In other words, the demands of the laws of physics,not the sculptor’s aesthetic intentions, placed the ball there. That this device was a necessary structural compromise is clear from the fact that the cannonball quickly disappeared when sculptors learned how to strengthen the internal structure of a statue with iron braces(iron being much stronger than bronze) …

According to paragraph 2, sculptors in the Italian Renaissance stopped using cannonballs in bronze statues of horses because

A. they began using a material that made the statues weigh less

B. they found a way to strengthen the statues internally

C. the aesthetic tastes of the public had changed over time

D. the cannonballs added too much weight to the statues

在做这题时,学生要么从段首读到段尾,要么就从“For example, in the early Italian Renaissance”读到最后,事实上这样都读到了过多的信息,做题时间过长。

2. 被无关信息干扰。在笔者的教学经验中发现,中国考生在做题过程中,最容易冲动地选择一些含有原文中出现过的信息的选项,而这些选项往往跟题目并没有任何的关联性。根本原因就是考生喜欢不习惯定位,喜欢通读全段。这样一来,浪费时间是一方面,另外一方面,选错的可能性又增大了。

如例2:OG Online Exam: Lascaux Cave Paintings Q11

Perhaps so much time has passed that there will never be satisfactory answers to the cave images, but their mystique only adds to their importance. Certainly a great art exists, and by its existence reveals that ancient human beings were not without intelligence, skill, and sensitivity.

According to paragraph 6, why might the puzzling questions about the paintings never be answered?

A. Keeping the paintings a mystery will increase their importance.

B. The artists hid their tools with great intelligence and skill.

C. Too many years have gone by since the images were painted.

D. Answering the question is not very important to scholars.

在做这个题目中,不少同学看到这一段非常短,于是索性从头读到尾,在各种纠结中选了各种选项。

3. 逻辑混乱,或忽视了逻辑关系。当然在托福阅读的教学过程上中,经过一定的引导,学生还是慢慢地学会去定位。尽可能地做到“提速与减负”,但是在这个过程中,学生们还是会做错。原因则在于,在题目中出现了一些逻辑关系,而学生则往往逻辑混乱,甚至是忽视了这些逻辑关系。如果利用好了这些逻辑关系,则能帮助学生更快的定位,更准确地找到答案。

再如例3:OG Practice Set 6: Swimming Machines: Q6

Paragraph 6: Because they are always swimming,tunas simply have to open their mouths and water is forced in and over their gills. Accordingly,they have lost most of the muscles that other fishes use to suck in water and push it past the gills. In fact, tunas must swim to breathe.They must also keep swimming to keep from sinking, since most have largely or completely lost the swim bladder, the gas-filled sac that helps most other fish remain buoyant.

6. According to the passage, which of the following is one of the reasons that tunas are in constant motion?

A. They lack a swim bladder.

B. They need to suck in more water than other fishes do.

C. They have large muscles for breathing.

D. They cannot open their mouths unless they are in motion.

这个题目就会因为逻辑混乱的问题,不少学生选择D。

其实只要学生观察这个题目的提问方式,我们还是能看出一些“门道”的:

仔细阅读这3 个事实信息题在提问方式方面的同性,不难发现,它们都在问because, why, 以及one of the reasons 等“原因”。那么,在教学过程中,我会把这一类专门问因果逻辑的事实题单独分出来,进行讲解。引导学生注意,题目在问“原因”,也就是答案必须是原因。有“原因”就会导致一个“结果”。“结果”就是题目。这样一来,学生就不难发现这样一个公式:“原因(答案)+ 结果(题目) = 原文某一因果逻辑关系的句群” 学生只要能利用“结果(题目)”回到文章中去定位,在定位词的附近找表示“原因”的逻辑关系词,也就能更快,更准地找到答案了。

当然课程进行到这里,我会加入一些学生活动,让学生先熟悉,或是回忆一些表“原因”的逻辑词,如:because/because of, result from, owing to/ due to,as a result of, since, for, attribute to, thanks to, so…that…等。再结合学生的基础补充一些隐性的因果逻辑词,如:when, if, unless…

回头来看一下之前的3 个题目

利用“ sculptors … stopped using cannonballs…” 定位到“the cannonball quickly disappeared”这一句话,在这个关键词的附近找到了“when” 这个表“原因”的隐性逻辑词,只要仔细阅读when 后面的信息“when sculptors learned how to strengthen the internal structure of a statue with iron braces (iron being much stronger than bronze)”便能快速确定答案为B,而不是在阅读了整段后,浪费了大量的时间后,还在思考,到底是B还是似乎原文中也提到的D?

例2 中, 学生利用“questions about the paintings never be answered” 定位到“there will never be satisfactory answers to the cave images”, 在附近找表“ 原因” 的逻辑词:“so… that…”,“so…”后面接原因,从而得出答案应该选择与原文“so much time has passed”意思一致,与时间相关的C 选项。而定位词后出现的逻辑“but”引导的信息点,也就是类似于A选项的信息也因为逻辑不对而被排除。

例3:OG Practice Set 6: Swimming Machines:Q6

Paragraph 6 : Because the yare always swimming, tunas simply have to open their mouths and water is forced in and over their gills. 最后, 例3 中, 用“constant motion” 学生往往会定位到2 处位置,第一处:“Because they are always swimming, tunas simply have to open their mouths and water is forced in and over their gills.” 第二处:“They must also keep swimming to keep from sinking, since most have largely or completely lost the swim bladder, the gas-filled sac that helps most other fish remain buoyant.”题目问的是:“导致金枪鱼constant motion 的原因是什么”, 所以重点看表示原因,也就是“since”后面的信息,就能得出A,而原文中第一句话则是说,always swimming (constant motion) 导致了一个结果:“金枪鱼打开他们的嘴巴”,也就是让学生纠结的D 选项犯了逻辑上的错误,即使这个选项中包含了原文中的信息,应该果断被排除。

以上便是我的托福阅读教学过程中,在讲解事实信息题过程中,用到一些思路与方法。

【托福】大数据:中国留学生最青睐的学校和专业有哪些?

网上总能看到中国留学生在哪里创新多的报道,时不时就被翻出来争讨,却谁也没有一个定论。


今天的这篇侨报报道,以STEM学科大火为切入点,从新的角度分析了中国留学生在某几所大学扎堆的原因,同时还带来了由第一手数据做出的权威中国留学生人数排名。


首先,美国大学为何如此受中国留学生追捧?


据中国教育部发布统计数据称,中国2015年的出国留学总人数为52.37万,较2014年增加了近13.9%,其中9成以上为自费留学。而美国在很长一段时间里都是最受欢迎的留学国家。


究其原因,不外乎以下两点:


1.美国大学和中学的数量都非常多,教育包容性强,能满足每个高净值家庭的独特需求,所以申请人尤其多;


2.美国学校的学术能力、资金状况好。从几个主流的世界大学排行榜来看,前100名的大学里,美国占50%左右。这种高强的教育质量自然受到了追求“名校”和优质教育资源的中国高净值人群的欢迎。

商科为何如此吸引中国学生?


虽然目前还尚未有官方机构来统计每年几十万留学生的专业选择,但从目前不同机构公布的数据来看,商科依旧是最受中国学生青睐的专业,此外学习理工科的学生群体也相当庞大。

美国《门户开放报告》中有一项专门针对国际学生所学专业的统计。从2012—2013学年到2014—2015学年三年的数据来看,中国学生选择专业的倾向十分明确且稳定:最受欢迎的是商科,每年都有四分之一以上的人学习商科,在2014-2015学年,这部分学生的总人数超过8万。


其实不止中国学生热爱商科,在美国留学的国际学生选择商科的比例也高达20.2%。


商科热门有多种原因:


1.兴趣所致


部分学生选择这个专业确实是出于自己的兴趣爱好。


2.易进好上手


商科是一个没有很强背景要求的专业,这一点在研究生阶段尤其明显,学生只要有相关经验并且GRE和托福成绩过关,即可申请商科。入学限制少导致申请商科的人数多,所以比起其他专业,商科学生的背景最多元。


3.安全保底


部分学生因为对自己未来的职业发展没有明确的规划,所以选择了商科这个看起来前途不错的“安全专业”。尤其是中国学生,因为普遍拥有良好的数学基础,所以在学习商科时能比较容易地拿到一个“体面”的GPA,毕业时不论是继续深造还是找工作都相对较有优势。


4.薪水丰厚


商科学生毕业后容易进入薪水相对丰厚的行业工作(比如金融业、咨询业),这一点也吸引了相当一部分人进入该专业。此外,对中国学生而言,还有一个特有的影响因素,即家庭的选择,部分中国家长有强烈的让孩子学习商科的欲望,孩子多半也会遵从父母的意见。

其次最受中国学生欢迎的专业包括工程学、数学和计算机科学、物理和生命科学等。这其中就要得益于美国对STEM专业学生的重点培养政策,相关政策还给予了STEM 相关专业的留学生非常多的实习和工作机会。

STEM简单来说有些类似于国内“理工科”的概念,是四大类学科,Science(科学),Technology(技术),Engineering(工程学)和Math(数学)的统称。留美中国学生就读专业Top10中的工程学、数学/计算机科学、物理/生命科学以及健康专业均属于STEM。


★ 理工科薪资保障


美国有成熟的IT、化工产业,这两个领域的学生有非常多且优质的工作机会,而数学、物理等学科的学生毕业后进入金融、保险、银行、地产和制药等高薪行业的机会也很大。因为整个STEM 学生的就业状况和薪水都在平均水平以上,所以选择该领域相关专业的学生也不少。


★ STEM学科受政策关照


据《侨报》记者徐一凡的报道,今年3月由美国国土安全部提交的理工科国际学生实习期延期新方案显示,持F-1签证且专业为STEM的国际学生,取得学位后可获得的OPT满一年后最多可申请24个月的延期。


这意味着理工科国际学生的OPT总长度将由29个月延长至3年。该方案将于3月11日正式公布,5月10日起生效。这对有意留在美国工作的中国学生而言,是一个非常大的利好消息,并很有可能在将来推动更多中国留学生选择STEM专业。
