Interior of Callisto

TPO42-03 Gallisto and Ganymede
Ganymede

Paragraph1

From 1996 to 1999, the Galileo spacecraft passed through the Jovian system, providing much information about Jupiter’s satellites. Callisto, the outermost of Jupiter’s four largest satellites, orbits the planet in seventeen days at a distance from Jupiter of two million kilometers. Like our own Moon. Callisto rotates in the same period as it revolves, so it always keeps the same face toward Jupiter. Its noon time surface temperature is only about -140°C, so water ice is stable on its surface year-round. Callisto has a diameter of 4.820 kilometers, almost the same as that of Mercury. Its mass is only one-third as great, which means its density must be only one-third as great as well. This tells us that Callisto has far less of the rocky metallic materials found in the inner planets and must instead be an icy body through much of its interior.

1. According to paragraph 1, which of the following statements about Callistois true?

A. It is the satellite closest to Jupiter’s surface

B. Its surface temperature is constant at all times of the day.

C. It has the same mass and diameter as the planet Mercury

D. It completes one rotation every seventeen days.

B“ Its noon time surface temperature is only about -140°C, so water ice is stable on its surface year-round.”
rotate自转 = revolve公转 = orbit the planet

2. According to paragraph 1, how do scientists know that Callisto is made up largely of ice?

A. A sample of its interior was taken by the Galileo spacecraft in the late 1990s

B. It has too low a density to contain much rocky metallic material

C. With a noon time surface temperature of only about -140° C. the ice on it never melts

D. All of the bodies in the Jovian system are icy, because they are so far from the Sun.

C选项得出的结论是“ so water ice is stable on the surface year round."

" This tells us that Callisto has far less of the rocky metallic materials【原因:答案】 found in the inner planets and must instead be an icy body【结果:题干】 through much of its interior."

Paragraph 2

Callisto has not fully differentiated, meaning separated into layers of different density materials.Astronomers can tell that it lacks a dense core from the details of its gravitational pull on the Galileo spacecraft during several very close flybys. This fact surprised scientists, who expected that all the big icy moons would be differentiated. It is much easier for an icy body to differentiate than for a rocky one, since the melting temperature of ice is so low. Only a little heating will soften the ice and get the process started, allowing the rock and metal to sink to the center and the slushy ice to float to the surface. Yet Callisto seems to have frozen solid before the process of differentiation was complete.

3.Why does the author provide the information that “It is much easier for an icy body to differentiate than for a rockyone”?

A. To support the claim that all of the big icy moons are differentiated

B. To suggest that Callisto may be a rocky body rather than an icy one

C. To explain why scientists expected Callisto to be differentiated

D. To refute the claim that Callisto could not differentiate because it was frozen solid

4. All of the following questions are answered in paragraph 2 EXCEPT:

A. Why was Callisto frozen solid before differentiation was complete?

B. What allows the process of differentiation to get started?

C. Why is it easier for an icy body to differentiate than a rocky one?

D. How do astronomers know that Callisto lacks a dense core?

Paragraph 3

Like our Moon’s highlands, the surface of Callisto is covered with impact craters. The survival of the secraters tells us that an icy object can form and retain impact craters m itssurface. In thinking of ice so far from the Sun, it is important not to judge its behavior from that of the much warmer ice we know on Earth; at the temperatures of the outer solar system, ice on the surface is nearly as hard as rock, and behaves similarly. Ice on Callisto does not deform or flow like ice in glaciers on Earth. Callisto is unique among the planet-sized objects of the solar system in its absence of interior forces to drive geological evolution. The satellite was born dead and has remained geologically dead for more than four billion years.

5. Which of the sentences below best expresses the essential information in the highlighted sentence in the passage? Incorrect choices change the meaning in important ways or leave out essential information.

A. It should not be assumed that surface ice has the same characteristics wherever it is found

B. Surface ice and rock are much more similar in temperature in the outersolar system than they are on Earth.

C. The further away surface ice is from the Sun, the more its temperature differs from that of the warmer ice on Earth

D. In the cold of the outer solar system, surface ice is so hard it behaves more like rock than like the warmer ice on Earth

6.According to paragraph 3, how is Callisto different from all other planet-sized objects in the solar system?

A. It can form and retain impact craters on its icy surface

B. It has ice glaciers that donot flow or deform.

C. It has never had the interior forces required for geological evolution.

D. It is more than four billion years old.【托福阅读讲堂】TPO42-03 Gallisto and Ganymede

Paragraph4

Ganymede, another of Jupiter’s satellites and the largest in our solar system, is also cratered, but less so than Callisto. About one-quarter of its surface seems to be as old and heavily cratered; the rest formed more recently, as we can tell by the sparse covering of impact craters as well as the relative freshness of the craters. Ganymede is a differentiated world, like the terrestrial planets. Measurements of its gravity field tell us that the rock and metal sank to form a core about the size of our Moon, with a mantle and crust of ice floating above it. In addition, the Galileo spacecraft discovered that Ganymede has a magnetic field, the signature of a partially molteninterior. Ganymede is not a dead world, but rather a place of continuing geological activity powered by an internal heat source. Much of its surface maybe as young as half a billion years.

7. The word “signature” in the passageis closest in meaning to

A. primary cause

B. end result

C. identifying mark

D. by-product

Signature:

a person’s name written in a distinctive way as a form of identification in authorizing a check or document or concluding a letter.

• the action of signing a document: the license was sent to the customer for signature.
• a distinctive pattern, product, or characteristic by which someone or something can be identified:
e.g. The chef produced the pâté that was his signature |
e.g. [ as modifier ] : his signature dish

8. According to paragraph 4, each of the following provides evidence about Ganymede’s interior EXCEPT

A. Ganymede’s large size

B. measurements of Ganymede’s gravity field

C. the fact that Ganymede has a magnetic field

D. the fact that Ganymede continues to be geologically active

Measurements of its gravity field tell us that the rock and metal sank to form a core about the size of our Moon”

TPO42-03 Gallisto and Ganymede

Paragraph 5

The younger terrain is the result of tectonic and volcanic forces Some features formed when the crust cracked, flooding many of the craters with water from the interior. Extensive mountain ranges were formed from compression of the crust, forming long ridges with parallel valleys spaced oneto two kilometers apart. In some places older impact craters were split and pulled apart. There are even indications of large-scale crustal movements that are similar to the plate tectonics of Earth.

9. The word “Extensive” in the passageis closet in meaning to

A. Unusual

B. Large

C. New

D. Steep

Extensive
1 covering or affecting a large area: an extensive garden.
• large in amount or scale: an extensive collection of silver.
2 (of agriculture) obtaining a relatively small crop from a large area with a minimum of attention and expense:
e.g. extensive farming techniques. Often contrasted with intensive

10. Paragraph 5 supports each of the following statements about Ganymede EXCEPT:

A. All water on it has always been frozen solid.

B. There is evidence that part of its crust once broke open

C. Its crust has been subject to forces that have created mountains and valleys.

D. Some of its older craters have been split apart by more recent geological activity

TPO42-03 Gallisto and Ganymede

Paragraph 6

Why is Ganymede different from Callisto? Possibly the small difference in size and internal heating between the two led to this divergence in their evolution. But more likely the gravity of Jupiter is to blame for Ganymede’s continuing geological activity. Ganymedeis close enough to Jupiter that tidal forces from the giant planet may have episodically heated its interior and triggered major convulsions on its crust.

11. According to paragraph 6, the differences in how Callisto and Ganymede evoked are most probably due to differences in their

A. size and internal heating

B. distance from Jupiter

C. chemical and physical composition

D. age

因为A只是"possibly", 题干问“most probably" ,定位 “But more likely the gravity of Jupiter is to blame for Ganymede’s continuing geological activity.”

12. Look at the four squares  []  that indicate where the following sentence could be added to the passage.

The difference between Ganymede and Callisto, however, extend much further below the surface of the satellites.

Where would the sentence best fit? Click on square [] to add the sentence to the passage

Ganymede, another of Jupiter’s satellite sand the largest in our solar system, is also cratered, but less so than Callisto. [] About one-quarter of its surface seems to be as old and heavily cratered;the rest formed more recently, as we can tell by the sparse covering of impact craters as well as the relative freshness of the craters. Ganymede is a differentiated world, like the terrestrial planets总句. [] Measurements of its gravity field tell us that the rock and metal sank to form a core about the size of our Moon, with a mantle and crust of ice floating above it. 分句1 [] In addition, the Galileo spacecraft discovered that Ganymede has amagnetic field, the signature of a partially molten interior. Ganymede is not a dead world, but rather a place of continuing geological activity powered by an internal heat source. Much of its surface may be as young as half a billion years.

13. Directions: complete the table below by selecting three answer choices that are characteristics of Ganymede and two answer choices that are characteristics of Galliston. This question is worth 3 points.

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement?

Young people nowadays do not give enough time to helping their communities.

The main reason for my disagreement is that community service could help students gain knowledge and abilities that cannot be acquired in school. They can get acquainted with people in different age, with different backgrounds, and having different hobbies in helping neighborhoods. This means that students may have to learn how to express ideas, listen to others and cooperate with others, since much team work tends to be involved in the process of doing community service. Last month, I helped plant several trees in my community, and met a retired professor who is also a volunteer. He imparted me a great deal of knowledge about trees and planting. Because of his age, I also helped him finish nearly all labor work and he was more like a director who gave me suggestions and guidance. Evidently, if rejecting community service, I would definitely lose such a precious opportunity.

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement?

Television, newspapers, magazines, and other media pay too much attention to the personal lives of famous people such as public figures and celebrities.

In almost every form of media, including television, newspapers and magazines, a great deal of attention is paid to the personal lives of celebrities. It seems that the public cannot get enough of this kind of news. However, I believe that what the media should do is to protect and respect the lives of public figures rather than giving too much exposure.

Of course, close reports of super stars, especially news about their private lives and relationships, can satisfy fans’ curiosity and therefore promote the sales of fan magazines and other related products. Those celebrities can also achieve more affection and appear more on TV shows or entertainment news. However, the media should respect the privacy of every individual, including public figures. It is true that celebrities may have chosen to be in the public eye, but that does not give the public the right to know everything about them. Zhang Bozhi, a famous Chinese actress, has to change her dwelling places for three times to protect her sons due to the fanatical paparazzi. It is definitely understandable that a super star should have privacy and an ordinary life.

1. 她老人家天天盯着我写作业,每天检查我做了多少道题,每周都会跟我们班主任沟通我上课的情况,导致我现在压力非常大,每天都神经紧绷,上课也非常紧张,怕老师跟我妈打小报告;

在上文的写作片段中,作者从开头段开始就已经走在了一条不太正确的道路上:“…a great deal of attention is paid to the personal lives of celebrities … However, I believe that what the media should do is to protect and respect the lives of public figures rather than giving too much exposure.”

… I do agree that the media have laid too much emphasis on the privacy of famous people.(开头段)

Firstly, a tendency has emerged that some producers of reality TV shows are willing to allocate large amounts of money to invite celebrities and even their children or families. It is evident that viewers could have an opportunity to get access to the real life of a super star, i.e., to see what a working day or a weekend of a star is, how different a star’s growing experience is from ordinary people, or what a star will do in a relationship. These shows can thus gain its popularity and then earn more from commercials but the celebrities have lost all their privacy and their families’ lives may be bothered as well.

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement?

Successful people try new things and take risks rather than only doing what they know how to do well.

Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

Nowadays there is a controversial issue about how people achieve success. Someone holds the opinion that by trying new things and taking risks that they become successful, while others think that they already know how to do well. From my perspective, I agree that it’s the spirit of adventure that plays the most important role in being successful.

First of all, trying new things could bring people more creativity and inspiration. To achieve success, you must make your products or services outstanding from the competitors. How to do it? I think the key factor is to be creative. In order to be creative, people must try new things. Let us take Jobs for example. The Apple was nearly bankrupt before Steve Jobs was invited to come back. As the CEO, what Jobs had done was trying his best to make products full of creativity. Iphone is the first cellphone using the technique of multi-touch, Macbook air is thinner than any laptops. Therefore, it is creativity that brings Apple from the edge of bankruptcy to the biggest company in the world.

Successful people have long been regarded as the role models for ordinary people and the ones many are willing to imitate. How they succeed in their fields has also been a topic of discussion among public. Although it is sometimes believed that only doing things one person is good at will make success, I still think it is trying new things that should be defined as the determining factor for success, since a diversity of examples have proven this statement.

First of all, the success of a great many business elites should be undoubtedly ascribed to the attempts to develop new fields. Most of them were faced with similar situations when starting their business: being negated, doubted, refused, even despised, just because things they had done were totally new and risky, not only for themselves, but for the market. The only positive side probably lies in the number of their rivals, zero. However, just by doing this, they finally exploit new opportunities, open new markets, and become the winner in the competition. Ma Yun, now the richest man in China, is a good example. After being turned down for hundreds of times, he has built his e-commercial empire all over the world, which used to be labeled as “impossible”. Steve Jobs, used to be the CEO of Apple, has been a legend and the God for billions of fans, largely due to his on-going efforts on the innovation of his products. It is not difficult to imagine that if they had only done what they know they can do well: Ma would have been teaching English in a school and Jobs perhaps a common Harvard undergraduate.

THREE PROBLEMS WITH THE MELANIA TRUMP PLAGIARISM ADMISSION

By Ryan Lizza from The New Yorker

For the second day in a row, the biggest news at the Republican National Convention, in Cleveland, is not about Donald Trump’s ideas for the country or even his case against Hillary Clinton.

Instead, the campaign story of the day―as Trump arrives on the shore of Lake Erie in his helicopter, and his running mate(副总统竞选搭档), Indiana Governor Mike Pence, gets ready for his début tonight―is how several sentences from Michelle Obama’s speech at the Democratic National Convention in 2008 made their way into the speech that Melania Trump gave on Monday night.【这表达真是讽刺啊,这说法~ 米歇尔的那几句话怎么会一字不落地跑到了梅拉尼亚的讲稿中呢?】

This afternoon, the Trump campaign released a letter from Meredith McIver, a speechwriter for the Trump Organization, that explains what happened.

In working with Melania on her recent First Lady speech, we discussed many people who inspired her and messages she wanted to share with the American people. A person she always liked is Michelle Obama. Over the phone, she read me some passages from Mrs. Obama’s speech as examples. I wrote them down and later included some of the phrasing in the draft that ultimately became the final speech. I did not check Mrs. Obama’s speeches. This was my mistake, and I feel terrible for the chaos I have caused Melania and the Trumps, as well as to Mrs. Obama. No harm was meant .

No, this is not Watergate, but episodes like this can tell us something about the character of a campaign. It is notable that(值得注意的是), until McIver’s letter appeared, the Trump campaign and an army of surrogates(代理人) repeatedlydenied accusations of plagiarism(对于抄袭的指控).

“There’s no cribbing(抄袭) of Michelle Obama’s speech,” Paul Manafort, Trump’s campaign chairman, said on CNN Tuesday morning. “These were common words andvalues(价值观), that she cares about her family(关心家庭). To think that she would be cribbing Michelle Obama’s words is crazy.”

Sean Spicer, the Republican National Committee’s communications director, pointed out(指出)that the language in question was so common that Twilight Sparkle, from “My Little Pony,” and Kid Rock had said similar things.

It’s unclear whether Manafort and Spicer knew the real story before they went on TV with their claims. If they did, then they knowingly did not tell the truth(说实话). If they didn’t, then the Trump campaign sent them out to tell lies(说谎)and has nowthrown them under the bus(扔下车).

The second issue raised by McIver’s letter concerns the continued mixing of Trump’s business and political organizations. McIver works for the Trump Organization, and her letter was on Trump Organization letterhead(信头). If she did【表强调】 in fact contribute to Melania Trump’s speech, then her time working for the campaign could be considered an in-kind donation(物资捐赠). The Federal Election Commission has clear rules about combining one’s business and campaign assets, but all signs point to the fact that there is no clear line separating these two Trump entities.

Finally, McIver’s explanation for what happened serves Melania poorly, putting her at the center of theplagiarism scandal(抄袭丑闻)rather thanmaking her an innocent victim(让她成为一个无辜的受害者)of her staff. It was Melania who【强调句,强调:正是Melania做了这些事】sought out(找出) Michelle Obama’s speech for inspiration. It was Melania who plucked passages that she admired from the 2008 speech. It was Melania whogave those passages to her speechwriter.【一连串强调句的排比,增强语势的同时,不给对方任何转圜的余地】How could Melania not recognize those exact lines(一模一样的字句)when she received thefinal draft(终稿)?【最后,还再补上一句反问句,你怎么可能认不出终稿中那些一模一样的字句呢?!】

Of course, Melania is not an author or academic. She might be unaware of(不了解)how seriously people in the press(媒体行业)and at universities(高校)take plagiarism. And perhaps she simply didn’t remember that the lines came from a speech she had admired. But, whatever the case(无论何种情况), McIver’s letter makes clear that it was Melaniaherself(反身代词,表示强调) who first lifted Michelle Obama’s language.

【关于lift的这个用法,特此转发给很爱抄袭的人】lift = vt. to take words, ideas etc from someone else’s work and use themm in your work, without stating where they came from and as if they were your own words etc

  【Exactly,

By releasing the letter, the Trump campaign might have thought that it wasputting the plagiarism story behind it(put sth. behind把……抛诸脑后,解决带哦), but it has just created a bigger mess(制造了更大的麻烦).

Just like a river flow。
